After more than 30 years managing three very different chambers of commerce and 12 years in politics, I tried to capture lessons I wish I had known when I started out. Apparently no one had taken a comprehensive look at the work of a chamber professional and the realities of work in a chamber of commerce.
Career
I retired from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce in 2019 after 15 years and spent the first year of my retirement reflecting on life in Chamber World. In effect I was writing a letter to myself about what I had learned.
Me
I encourage chamber leaders to practice what I call civic entrepreneurship, actively innovating by capturing a vision for their communities and bringing cutting-edge ideas and best practices from outside their communities to implement at home.
